Doctoral Mobility: Results of the Call for Projects between Université Paris Cité and the University of Toronto

As part of the strategic partnership between Université Paris Cité (UPCité) and the University of Toronto (U of T), supported by the Initiative d’Excellence (IdEx), the call for doctoral mobility projects launched in 2026 aims to develop joint activities around themes of shared interest, fostering the emergence of scientific collaborations and strengthening long-term research ties between France and Canada. Open to all disciplines, the call resulted in funding for two doctoral mobility projects, selected following a joint evaluation conducted by both institutions.

UPCité and U of T : a long-term partnership

In line with the objectives set by the call for projects, which supports 12 consecutive months of mobility to intensify collaboration between French and Canadian teams, this strategic partnership between UPCité and U of T aims to deepen the collaborations already underway between the faculties of both institutions, while helping to build a lasting, high-profile scientific and institutional relationship between France and Canada.

Funding

The grant covers mobility costs – a round-trip plane ticket and a contribution toward accommodation expenses – for participating doctoral students, according to the following terms:

  • UPCité provides financial support of up to €13,200 for a one-year mobility period in Toronto;
  • U of T provides financial support of up to CAD 15,000 for a one-year mobility period in Paris.

2026 Selected projects

Following a joint evaluation, two projects were selected for this edition.

One project in Humanities and Social Sciences:

  • “Culinary Nostalgia: Liminality of Food and Identity in Persianate Diasporic Women’s Writings in English (1980s-2020s)”, led by doctoral student Harshita SINGH (UPCité) and supervised by the research team composed of Ladan Niayesh (UPCité) and Josée Johnston (U of T).

One project in Sciences:

  • “Modeling magnetic moiré materials to unlock high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect”, led by doctoral student Matthew ALBERT (U of T) and supervised by the research team composed of Valentin Crépel (U of T) and Christophe Mora (UPCité).
