Université Paris Cité is joining forces against all forms of discrimination, including homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. It is committed to raising awareness and supporting the entire university community with regard to these issues, particularly through the actions of the Mission ÉgalitéS.

On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on May 17, the Université Paris Cité reiterated its commitment to abide by, protect and promote equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTQIA+) people. Although the day celebrates the huge progress made, it is also a reminder of how far we still have to go.

The university’s Mission ÉgalitéS offers a focus on various information and awareness resources in the fight against discrimination and inequality.

What Exactly is LGBT?

The Stonewall riots in the late 1960s sparked the LGBT movement, now referred to as LGBTQIA+. It condemned the oppression of people who do not fit into the codes of heterosexuality worldwide. Mathieu Duplay, professor of American literature at the UFR (training and research department) for English Studies, recalls the origins of the movement and interprets them in the context of its history.

What Exactly are Queer and Queer of Colour?

New terms related to minorities emerged in the 2000s. Among them we find the word Queer, long considered a pejorative word, meaning “strange”, “odd”, “peculiar”, “eccentric” or “not quite right”. Sandeep Bakshi, senior lecturer in postcolonial and queer studies; lays out a study path to a better understanding of this idea and how it evolved in France.

One of them is specifically on homophobia and belief in conspiracies.
