Study in Japan

Students who wish to go to Japan have a wide range of choices based on their purpose of travel. In addition to the many opportunities provided by agreements between Université Paris Cité and universities in Japan, students can also apply for scholarship programs offered by the Japanese government or the private sector.

Exchange Programs with Japanese Universities

Université Paris Cité has student exchange agreements with around 20 Japanese universities. Thanks to these agreements, students can travel to Japan for an extended period (one or two semesters) and benefit from their host university’s infrastructure (libraries, student residences, on-campus dining, sports facilities, etc.). Where applicable, they can benefit from supervision for their research projects. This arrangement tends to be the most popular, as around 25 undergraduate and graduate students from the Japanese section travel to Japan each year.

Students make significant progress in their written and spoken Japanese through the immersion process. Students registered at Université Paris Cité are exempt from paying tuition at their host university. A study agreement will be created with the academic team in order to identify the courses that best correspond to students’ degrees during their semester(s) abroad in Japan.

These programs are primarily for L3 and master’s students of Japanese Studies.

There are two programs that are primarily for L2 LLCE students of Japanese (Shirayuri & Aichi).

An information session is held each year in October. Applications are to be sent to the International Relations Office before the end of November for students who wish to study abroad in September of the following year. Successful applicants will be informed by the end of January.

Interested students must take the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) regardless of their level as the certificate is required by Japanese universities.

Monbukagakusho Scholarship

Monbukagakusho Scholarship – Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Two types of scholarships are available for French students. These are a yearlong Japanese language and culture scholarship for L3 students, and a three-semester research and study scholarship (which can be potentially extended) for master’s and doctoral students who wish to conduct research in Japan. Interested candidates must apply through the admissions process organized by the Embassy of Japan.

Summer Internships at a Partner University in Japan

Some Japanese universities set up language internships for two weeks over the summer for students who wish to develop their knowledge of Japanese language and culture. These include Meiji University, Ochanomizu University and International Christian University (ICU). Scholarships from the Japanese Ministry of Education are at times available to students who participate on a university exchange agreement.

  • Summer Language Internships Financed by the Foundation for the Study of Japanese Language and Culture

Each year this Foundation, under the Fondation de France, offers financial assistance of around €3,050 to students who present a solid interest in the summer language internship in Japan. Applications are due in February for review by an academic panel.

  • Language Schools in Japan

Students also have the opportunity to study at one of the many language schools located across Japan. These schools, such as the Espace Langue Tokyo (ELT), offer attractive language programs with exciting cultural trips.
