“I am not a painter, I am a poet.
Why? I think I would rather be
a painter, but I am not. Well, […]

‘Why I Am Not a Painter’, Frank O’Hara (1926-1966)

This course will focus on the poetry of the New York School – the avant-garde movement of painters, poets, musicians and multimedia artists living and working in New York City in the 1950s and ‘60s. These artists were in conversation with one another, in life as in work, taking each other and each others’ creations as their subject matter. The study of their work invites us to switch between mediums, following the conversation, and building up a rich impression of their interpersonal relationships, their artistic motivations, and their understanding of the time and place they were living in.
Poets include: John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara and Joe Brainard Artists include: Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and Willem de Kooning Musicians include: John Cage and Morton Feldman

Comme le cours se déroule entièrement en anglais, un niveau de langue avancé est requis (minimum B2).
