Cycle of five conferences led by Vincent Berger, professor at Université Paris Cité.

Cycle period: From January 27th 2022 to March 31st 2022

Part 1: The multi-faceted energy transition

Reflection on the ins and outs of global energy consumption and global warming

Part 2: Towards new ways of energy consumption

Known advantages and disadvantages. Open questions.

Global warming is already irreversible and no slowdown is foreseen: the efforts of countries do not compensate for the growth of emerging countries and fossil fuels remain the largest mode of energy production. The solutions do not only depend on research, but also on geopolitical, meteorological and seismic parameters (the Fukushima nuclear accident caused an acceleration of the slowdown in the use of nuclear power). Each energy source has disadvantages and advantages:

  • Solar energy: the energy is free and limits the release of CO2 but the manufacture of the panels is energy intensive.
  • Wind energy: this source of energy is inexhaustible and free, but the cost of installation is high, and residents do not always accept the construction of wind turbines.
  • Hydrogen: many applications are possible but the storage of hydrogen remains the major drawback of this energy source.
  • Many other energy sources are being developed such as hydro power, geothermal power, renewable gases, biomass, etc.
