This is a list of possible topics for Master’s dissertations. Students are free to choose a topic from this list or to take inspiration from it in order to devise their own. In any case, the attribution of a topic will rely on a mandatory reading/viewing/playing list which the student will have to go through before I confirm my supervision.
- Fantasies of knowledge in detective and/or puzzle videogames (The Witness, Obra Dinn, Her Story, The Golden Idol, Outer Wilds, etc.)
- Playing (with) the frontier myth in Oregon Trail, Red Dead Redemption (2), and When Rivers Were Trails
- Thinking beyond colonial heroism in videogames (Mutazione, Sable, 80 Days, and many others)
- Videogames made by and about indigenous people: challenging the mechanics of imperial cartography, decolonising exploration, playing with responsibility and for balance, etc.
- Animal avatars and non-human agency in videogames
- Ecologies of agency in virtual storyworlds: Gardening in Games (Mutazione, Animal Crossing, The Garden Path, etc.)
- Mechanics of choice in interactive narratives: epistemological and ethical implications
- Playing with time in interactive narratives: loops, death, and other disruptions (Outer Wilds, Minit, Deathloop, 12 Minutes, Braid, etc.)
- Aesthetics and politics of in-game photography
- Dynamics of playing and viewing in playthroughs, streaming, machinimas, and art videos made from games (Harun Farocki, Total Refusal, Jodi, Cori Archangel, Mimosa Echard, etc.)
- Challenging player control and agency: idle games (e.g. Mountain), slow games (e.g. The Longing), difficult games (e.g. Celeste), eye-controlled games (Before your Eyes), etc.
- Aesthetics and politics of so-called “Queer Games”
Here is a list of topics or ideas that DO NOT work because they involve overly simplistic or descriptive approaches: any topic suggesting that videogames have active users and that films, novels, etc. have passive users; any topic simply comparing a film or videogame adaptation to its source (without in-depth analyses of the specificity of each medium, each socio-cultural/historical/economical context, etch genre, etc.); any topic simply tracking the “representation of” a character, a figure, a trope etc. in different texts/films/games without problematising (without in-depth analyses of the specificity of each medium, each socio-cultural/historical/economical context, etch genre, etc.)
