Validation of the master’s degree

Here are the rules used to compute the global grade of the master’s degree, and whether the master is validated or not:

  • The master comprises 4 semesters. Each semester comprises several UE, and each UE comprises several courses (called “ECUE“)
  • The overall master’s grade is the average of the four Master’s semesters
  • There is no compensation between semesters, each semester must be validated
  • There is no compensation between UEs, each UE must be validated
  • A course (= one ECUE) is validated iff the grade is ≥ 10
  • Within a UE, the grades can compensate each other, which implies that a UE can be sometimes validated even though some of its ECUE are not. More precisely:
    • a UE is validated iff the weighted average of its ECUEs is ≥ 10, and each ECUE’s grade is ≥ 7/20
  • NB: averages are calculated using coefficients, as defined in the “structure” for each “parcours”:
  • Most courses have a “second chance” exam (or “second session“)
    • except those for which “pas de 2e chance” is indicated in the official evaluation rules (“MCC”)
    • IMPORTANT: if a UE is not validated at the first session, then for the ECUE it contains, the grades that are below 10/20 are not reported for the second session. The student must pass the second chance exam in this case.
    • Example: for the UE1, if in the first session a student gets
      • 11 in “phonetics”
      • 10,5 in “theoretical morphology”
      • 9 in “theoretical syntax”
      • 9 in “semantic analysis”
      • => she or he must go to the second chance exam in “theoretical syntax” and “semantic analysis”
  • If the M1 year is validated, admission to the M2 year is guaranteed.
  • If the year is not validated (M1 or M2), the student may repeat the year, subject to authorization by the jury.
    • The validated status of UE and ECUE is transferred throughout the years
    • But NB: for the ECUE that were neither directly validated nor compensated within the UE, the grades are not transferred to the following year.
    • Example:
      • in UE1, suppose a student gets 8 in phonetics, 9 in theoretical morphology, 12 in syntax, and 10 in semantic analysis. The UE is not validated.
      • If the student repeats the year, she or he has to do again phonetics and theoretical morphology, the 8 and 9 are completely ignored. Having e.g. 10 in phonetics and not redoing theoretical morphology would not suffice to compensate.
