Validation of the master’s degree
Here are the rules used to compute the global grade of the master’s degree, and whether the master is validated or not:
-
The master comprises 4 semesters. Each semester comprises several blocks, and each block comprises several courses (called “UE“)
-
The overall master’s grade is the average of the four Master’s semesters
-
There is no compensation between semesters, each semester must be validated
-
There is no compensation between blocks, each block must be validated
-
A course (= one UE) is validated iff the grade is ≥ 10
-
Within a block, the grades can compensate each other, which entails that a block can be sometimes validated even though some of its UEs are not. More precisely:
-
a block is validated iff the weighted average of its UEs is ≥ 10, and each UE’s grade is ≥ 7/20
-
- NB: averages are calculated using coefficients, as defined in the “structure” for each “parcours”:
-
Some courses have a “second chance” exam (or “second session“). The list will soon be available.
- IMPORTANT: if a block is not validated at the first session, then for the UEs it contains, the grades that are below 10/20 are not kept for the second session. The student must pass the second chance exam in this case.
- Example: a student in M1 TELPh receives at the first session the following grades:
- 11 in “phonetics”
- 8 in “morphology”
- 9 in “syntax”
- 9 in “semantics”
- 10 in “linguistic typology”
- => they must go to the second chance exam in “morphology”, “syntax”, and “semantics”
- If the M1 year is validated, admission to the M2 year is guaranteed.
- If the year is not validated (M1 or M2), the student may repeat the year, subject to authorization by the jury.
- The validated status of block and UE is transferred throughout the years
- But NB: for the UE that were neither directly validated nor compensated within their block, the grades are not transferred to the following year.
- Example:
- Suppose that at the end of the year (after the second session) a student receives the same grades above. The block is not validated.
- If the student repeats the year, they have to take again “morphology”, “syntax”, and “semantics”. The grades from the previous year are erased. However they will keep their grades in “phonetics” and “linguistic typology”, and will not be allowed to take these classes again.
