U7+ Alliance
The U7+ Alliance gathers presidents from universities across the world with a common objective – to conceive and implement actual actions to rise up to global challenges. U7+ operates at the heart of the multilateral agenda and works directly with G7 governments. Today, the Alliance brings together nearly fifty universities from nineteen G7 countries and beyond, offering a unique space for cooperation and influence at the global level. This framework enables Université Paris Cité to project its societal commitment and assert its role as a university with a positive impact on an international scale.
What is the U7+ Alliance?
The U7+ Alliance, created in 2019 under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron, is the first international coalition of university leaders, bringing together nearly 50 leading institutions across five continents. Its mission is to represent higher education and research at the highest level, translating academic and scientific thinking into concrete commitments capable of responding to major societal challenges.
Since its inaugural summit in Paris in 2019, Alliance members have met annually ahead of the G7 to establish a joint roadmap, advocate collectively and identify key areas requiring enhanced cooperation. The Alliance’s strategic priorities include strengthening democracy, combating climate change, academic freedom and the impact of technological innovations. To translate these priorities into concrete results, U7+ relies on thematic working groups that bring together experts, researchers and university leaders to develop interdisciplinary approaches to global challenges.
UPCité’s global social commitment
As a member of the U7+ Alliance, Université Paris Cité affirms its role as a global player and brings its social commitments and its ‘Planetary Health’ signature to the forefront of international dialogue.
“Faced with challenges that know no borders, integrating universities into multilateral decision-making bodies is essential for global stability and resilience. As a member of the U7+ Alliance, Université Paris Cité helps transform knowledge into a lever for political action. This direct link with G7 governments enables the university to take its societal commitments to the highest level of international decision-making.” Antoine Kouchner, Vice President for International Strategy and Relations
This dynamic of multilateral engagement is supported by the presence, within the Alliance itself, of UPCité’s strategic and long-standing partners. Leading institutions such as the University of Montreal, the University of Toronto, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) are key allies in influencing the direction of multilateral dialogue. UPCité is also strengthening its ties with other important members of the Alliance, such as the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, with which a framework agreement has just been signed, and the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.
