The Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) has just unveiled its results for the 2026 edition on Tuesday 15 September. Université Paris Cité has excelled by being ranked in 26 disciplines – including 10 in the global top 50 – and by achieving 1st place in France or tied for 1st place in 10 disciplines.
A month after the publication of the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), in which Université Paris Cité rose to 57th place, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) has confirmed the university’s academic excellence. The GRAS assesses the world’s leading universities across 57 disciplines, grouped into five major fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.
Strong positions in the global top 50
This year, Université Paris Cité stands out as the most represented French university in the global top 50, with 10 disciplines featuring among the top fifty, including:
• Earth Sciences: 15th worldwide
• Human Biological Sciences: 17th worldwide
• Mathematics: 18th worldwide
• Biological Sciences: 28th worldwide
• Clinical Medicine: 31st worldwide
• Public Health: 32nd worldwide
• Physics: 34th worldwide
• Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences: 36th worldwide
• Medical Technology: 39th worldwide
• Statistics: 42nd worldwide
First French university in 10 disciplines
At national level, Université Paris Cité has confirmed its status as a leading institution by securing first place in France or joint first place in 10 of the 26 disciplines in which it is ranked: Earth Sciences, Human Biological Sciences, Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Technology, Dentistry and Dental Sciences, Biotechnology, Educational Sciences. Nationally, the university also ranks second in Geography and Psychology, third in Mathematics, Statistics and Biomedical Engineering, and fourth in Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Atmospheric Sciences.

Created in 2009 and published annually by ShanghaiRanking, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is based on nine objective indicators grouped into five categories: academic staff excellence, scientific output excellence, high-quality research, research impact and international collaboration. Each edition analyses around 20,000 subject areas from nearly 2,000 universities across some 100 countries.
