Hosted by Université Paris Cité on October 6th, 2023, the Circle U. Think and Do Tank held its conference “European Universities as Actors in Multilingualism”. Bringing together over 39 in person participants as well as 125 online, the conference focused on providing an overview of the work undertaken during the pilot phase by the Circle U. multilingualism working group of the Think and Do Tank.

Circle U. European University Alliance brings together Université Paris Cité, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, King’s College, London, UCLouvain, University of Oslo, Aarhus University, University of Belgrade, Université of Pisa and Université of Vienna
Making Circle U. a Multilingual Alliance
“Multilingualism is not a state, it’s an action.” At the conference, participants shared the view that language skills are central to the construction of the European Education Area. They are essential to mobility, cooperation and mutual understanding across borders. The European Union defines multilingualism as “the ability of societies, institutions, groups and individuals to use more than one language on a regular basis in their daily lives”.
Members of the multilingualism taskforce of the Circle U. Think & Do Tank along with guests representing the European Union, policymakers and other alliances, including UNITA and EUTOPIA, discussed the role of multilingualism in alliances and the higher education sector as a whole.
In the expansion phase starting as of November 1, 2023, Circle U. will continue the work initiated by the Think and Do Tank, in its Multilingualism Interculturality and Languages Lab (CU.mil), led by UCLouvain.
