On November 6th 2024, Université Paris Cité and Université PSL brought together the communities of The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities for an event about artificial intelligence and its impact on universities, at the PariSanté Campus.

Reflecting on AI Developments in Higher Education

During the conference, the panellists discussed questions such as: what are the ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of data and AI in research? How can AI be used as a tool for educational experimentation? Or, what is the role of universities in a society where AI is becoming more important?

A hundred participants attended the conference, on site or online. Among them academics in AI from universities belonging to the Guild, leading figures in the artificial intelligence field, and representatives of the European Commission.

Université Paris Cité, open to the transformations of AI

Université Paris Cité showcased its initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence thanks to its two researchers present at the event:

Stéphanie Allassonnière, Innovation and Valorisation Vice President and Deputy Director of the PR[AI]RIE Institute, one of four French institutes dedicated to artificial intelligence. Her research focuses on the statistical modelling of medical data to understand the common characteristics of populations and to develop classification and decision support systems.

She is active in medical and engineering training, and also a co-founder of Sonio, a start-up offering a tool to help medical staff to monitor pregnancy, women’s and children’s health, and to reassure families.

Alexandre Loupy, nephrologist with two doctorates in basic sciences and epidemiology/biostatistics. He is a professor at Université Paris Cité and director of the Paris Transplant Group within the PARCC (Université Paris Cité – Inserm) and the Paris Institute for Transplantation and Organ Regeneration (PITOR) at Université Paris Cité.

His medical and scientific background has led him to develop innovative multidisciplinary research in patient care.

With his team, he has developed the Integrative Box System (iBox), a digital biomarker that can predict graft survival and the effectiveness of immunosuppressive treatments at an early stage of transplantation. This AI-based tool is integrated into a medical decision support software solution to improve the management of kidney transplant patients.

A collective Ambition to see Higher Education Evolve

This gathering unveiled the determination of the Guild’s members to adapt to developments emerging from artificial intelligence. The purpose is to embrace these transformations created by AI in order to move the research forward, improve teaching practices and respond to societal challenges.

What is The Guild?

The Guild network of research-intensive universities, of which Université Paris Cité is a member brings together more than twenty of Europe’s most prestigious universities, spread across sixteen countries, since its creation in 2016. The members work together to establish reflexions and partnerships on societal issues, highlighting the role of research as an innovative solution.
The Guild defends these interests in front of the European institutions in order to influence research, innovation and higher education policies, while strengthening the voice of universities, their teacher-researchers and their students. In 2016, Paris Diderot joined the network. Following the merger with its founding university Paris Descartes and the integration of the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris as a component institution, Université Paris Cité remained a member of the network.
