NCDs at the Heart of Global Health Challenges
On November 25, 2024, the International Symposium on Non-Communicable Diseases highlighted the issues surrounding NCDs and brought together a wide range of disciplines from the humanities, social sciences, sciences and health. Participants explored the social, dietary and environmental determinants that contribute to the rise of NCDs, while exploring the innovative solutions offered by emerging technologies. Among these innovations, artificial intelligence and conversational robots were presented as tools for personalized patient follow-up and improved healthcare systems. Senegal’s Minister of Health and Social Action opened the symposium by emphasizing the health challenges posed by NCDs worldwide and in the region.
Université Paris Cité’s ongoing Commitment to Research in Africa
Université Paris Cité is actively involved in Africa, notably through research collaborations with institutions such as UCAD. A case in point is the research cluster on non-communicable diseases, headed by Prof. Xavier Jouven for UPCité and Prof. Ibrahima Bara Diop for UCAD. This initiative is part of a wider network, the Clusters d’Excellence en Recherche Afrique-Europe (CoRE) of the Alliance of African Research Universities (ARUA) and the Guild, which brings together African and European universities to work together on societal issues. In parallel, the African Research Network, to which Université Paris Cité belongs, works to advance global health by encouraging cooperation between teacher-researchers from 20 sub-Saharan African countries, while facilitating researcher mobility and supporting research projects aimed at fighting NCDs.
« The research network on non-transmissible diseases, piloted by 20 sub-Saharan African countries, will enable innovative projects to be set up between UCAD and UPCité. » Prof. Xavier Jouven
New prospects for collaboration between UPCité and UCAD
Representatives of the two institutions discussed new opportunities for academic development and research. Deans, vice-deans and teacher-researchers from the Faculties of Social and Human Sciences, Sciences and Health at Université Paris Cité were able to discuss with their UCAD counterparts to define new areas of cooperation.
« Our meetings showed that there are many opportunities for collaboration between our two establishments, not only because of the shared French language, but also because of the wide overlap of disciplines.» Antoine Kouchner, Vice-President Strategy and International Relations
